Dreamless sleep, consciousness, memory

  • it would have to acknowledge the existence of consciousness in dreamless sleep if experiences fitting the conceptual profile of dreamless sleep experience were reported >> flaw is that autonomous memory is not considered
  • Advaitin conception suggests that a certain type of sleep experience is characterized by dissolution of the self-other distinction, so that the feeling of being a distinct self is absent. In contrast, the feeling of being a self remains present in dreams.
  • example : cook in kitchen, orders are on paper, he can continue just like the one in prior shift, all awareness depends on the physical memory to which the process we call consciousness has access . The process cannot exists independent of physical memory in brain, much like the cook cannot continue across shifts, without the order lists.
  • The process of consciousness in a person is fully defined by the contents of the brain. Suppose you experience fear on seeing color red. That implies, your optical neurons are connected to the limbic in a way that generates the experience of fear. Consider stopping this process and restarting.
  • replace the cook with a cook-robot that was powered off for a while and then powered up. Every time you turn it on, it performs like the cook, it does the same job. There is no self within it. The arrangement of physical matter within it and electricity defines how it behaves. It can have memory of orders that came in while it was awake last time before it was powered down. The order list is stored in it’s memory. Every time it is powered up, it’s physical parts control the flow of energy through it’s systems, producing a behavior including memory, resulting in a process. The process is new, but it is very much like the old. Feeling can also be stored in memory. When consciousness invokes a memory, the information saved in neuron is also inclusive of information on what is to be input to the lymbic system, thus the invocation of memory also invokes similar feeling. The unsolved puzzle remains the ability to feel, sentience.
